Age 5 Syndrome
Age 5 Syndrome is one of the important milestones in the developmental processes of children. Children at this age experience basic experiences in many subjects such as how they can cope with the events they encounter in the later stages of their lives, the methods they will adopt to solve the events, and whether they will have an outward or introverted structure..
It is a process in which children’s sense of curiosity is at their peak and they permanently engrave the answers to the questions they find in their minds.
As they see that the rules of society, which they were exempted from due to their young age, are slowly coming their way, they discover new worlds and become happy or unhappy individuals at the level of adaptation they provide to these worlds.

Another change seen especially in boys during the Age 5 Syndrome period is the tendency of testosterone hormones to increase. Testosterone levels in boys aged 3-4 years are no different from girls. However, with the end of the age of 4, hormones begin to take on characteristic structures according to gender characteristics.
The hormonal change in the child’s body causes the 5-year-old syndrome to be quite active and angry. One can encounter the scene of a hyperactive child jumping from that sofa to this sofa, tending to enjoy disrupting the order in the house.
However, this extraordinary activity and inexhaustible energy are certainly not enough to diagnose hyperactivity for every child. On the contrary, when the final balances in the testosterone level are completed after the age of 6, everything will return to normal and there will be no trace of this view.

Until this normalization date comes, the child should be patient and his misbehavior should not be responded to with punishments that can harm his personality and psychology.
However, the said patience should not be confused with condoning everything the child does and displaying an attitude that will cause him to become a spoiled personality. It is clear that we are going through a sensitive period in which the basis of children’s responsibility is largely determined.
It has been observed that children with the Age 5 Syndrome have increased their self-confidence and they have the desire to try all the information they have learned so far alone. They may attempt self-focused actions such as eating without help or wanting to skate on their own in a park they go to for fun.

It may be okay to let children do these actions on their own, under parental supervision, to contribute to their future self-confidence. Because the damage that may occur in an accident that may occur while performing the action may not cause a major damage.
Of course, every parent wants to protect their child from all kinds of harm, big or small, but it may be necessary to take risks for such damage that can greatly increase the child’s self-confidence in his life. However, the actions that children want to do on their own during these periods are not just small options that can be taken at risk.
For example, a child who is going to cross the road with his mother may want to leave his mother’s hand and want to do this job alone, which he realizes is a dangerous job with the experiences he has gained so far. Parents need to be wary of such sudden outbursts.
