Protecting Your Child From Home Accidents

Home accidents are in the first place in childhood life losses. Among the most common of these; falls, trachea blockages, boiling water burns, fire burning, poisoning, drinking or eating cleaning agents, drug poisoning and electric shocks. It is very important that mothers, fathers and caregivers are conscious enough to prevent home accidents.

MAKE SURE THE LOCATIONS ARE NOT WET

In home accidents, the floor is slippery and wet, and there are toys and other foreign objects on the ground, especially for young children to fall. Keeping the windows and balcony doors open uncontrolled and the absence of handrails around the child’s bed lead to life-threatening accidents. The contact of children with household chemicals such as food and drug poisoning, detergent and lime remover are also the most important causes of poisoning.

It is very important not to panic during accidents. After the child is safely removed from the accident environment, relevant emergency numbers should be called and professional support should be sought. Health institution, poison counseling center, fire department and security related numbers must be kept on your phone.

  1. Store chemicals that may be harmful to your child, especially medicines, indoors and out of the reach of children.
  2. Do not leave young children alone at home and do not entrust your younger brother under 12 or another child.
  3. Have a small emergency kit at home and in your car.
  4. Make sure there is a smoke alarm at home.
  5. Ensure that electrical equipment, especially in older buildings, meets the necessary safety standards. Make sure that the sockets are installed so that they are not dangerous for children.
  6. Make sure that the plugs of electrical appliances such as iron, heater, oven, blender are unplugged from active use.
  7. Keep equipment that can cause fire, such as matches and lighters, away from small children.
  8. Do not leave your children alone on slippery and wet surfaces.
  9. Never take your child on your lap if you have a hot drink or nevertheless. Do not give to your baby without checking the temperature of food and drinks.
  10. To prevent the slippage of carpets and rugs, place special anti-slip materials underneath them.
  11. Always keep your outer door locked.
  12. Make sure that the toys played by the baby or your child are age-appropriate and check them regularly.
  13. If using a mosquito net on the bed, make sure that it is tight and supported.
  14. After your baby begins to crawl, put obstacles at the beginning and end of the stairs, on the risky room doors.
  15. Do not let him walk while eating, do not give hard foods such as carrots and quince before 3 years of age.
